QUESTION:
Hello, I'm a 5'4" 150 pound woman with 29% body fat. What fitness machines in a gym can I use to strengthen a torn rotator cuff?
ANSWER:
A "torn rotator cuff" does not provide enough information to answer a question as it's composed of four seperate muscles and usually involves the biceps tendon. Even so, a torn rotator cuff often requires surgery and even after corrective surgery it can be a debilitating injury especially if you don't rehabilititate it properly.
This being said, if your rotator cuff is indeed torn you should seek a specialist (doctor) who can give you a proper diagnosis and refer you to a physical therapist who can prescribe you an strengthening and flexibility exercise program for the muscles of your rotator cuff.
Your rotator cuff muscles are small and weak so resistance tubing and small dumbbells are usually all you need to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles. If you were never diagnosed with a tear, you may just have a strain which will go away in time.
Tips to Avoid Rotator Cuff Problems
- Always perform a proper general warm up (i.e. 5 min. on a bike) before more strenuous activity.
- Always lift weights under complete control
- Keep your shoulders protracted during most movements
- Only perform rotator cuff exercises prescribed by a physical therapist or qualified individual
- Limit or eliminate all overhead movements
- Avoid performing excessive upper body weight training
- If you experience pain, seek professional help (in person) before injury worsens
- If it hurts your shoulders, don't do it
