build butt and tone

QUESTION:

Hello I'm a 5'5" 112 pound woman with unknown body fat percentage.  I wanted to ask how to tone the rear end and make it bigger.

What exercises do I do?

I have heard squats, lunges etc. My concern is that I do not want to just end up with a rock hard butt that has no fat on it ,I do not want to turn it all into muscle.  Is it even possible to gain inches on ones butt?

I have heard it is a myth that you can turn fat into muscle so would it just gain more muscle under and still have the same amount of fat on top? I have always wondered all of this and would love an answer! Thanks!

ANSWER:

You are correct muscle cannot turn into fat and vice-versa.  Muscle is made up of individual cells that undergo all kinds of complex metabolic processes. Fat cells are simply storage packets of lipids. If you stop working out and stop applying resistance to your muscles on a consistent basis, they will simply adapt to the new condition.

In other words, they'll shrink. Consequently, you will burn less calories with less muscle mass and if you caloric intake is the same, you will gain fat.  However, muscle doesn't turn into fat.

By doing lunges, squats, sumo-squats, deadlifts, and Romanian deadlifts you will be able increase the amount of muscle mass in your lower body (Butt Included).

In other words, yes it is possible to gain inches around your butt by exercising.  When you increase the amount of muscle mass in your body it will build underneath the skin layer and fat layer.  Here is an example of your body tissue layers.

If you want to add firmness and size to your rear end, I recommend doing the exercises I listed above.
